I suppose I knew what I was getting myself into when I booked my tickets for Bad Grandpa, with the team behind the Jackass franchise involved I was fully prepared for outrageous stunts and very crude humour, both of course feature heavily in this movie (not a spoiler). The story follows the exploits of 86 year old Irving Zisman played by Johnny Knoxville (in surprisingly effective make up) who is left looking after his estranged grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll) after his mother is thrown in jail. Reluctant to take responsibility he decides to pass him off to his deadbeat dad Thus the typical clichéd road movie plot across America develops, not that there is too much wrong with that.
Everything you want from a Jackass spin-off is here,Knoxville is still being as wacky as ever, some funny moments mixed with some awkward and disgusting ones. Some sketches may outstay their welcome but there enough laughs for sure. But as a casual fan of the Jackass franchise I felt there was a real missed opportunity in developing Irving’s and Billy’s relationship throughout the film, I didn’t find Irving very likeable and there were no moments that changed my mind so when it came to a rather anti-climatic meeting with the aforementioned dad character, I struggled to engage with what were intended to some genuinely sweet moments.
I wasn’t disappointed by the film; it does what it set out to do. My only gripe is that it doesn’t attempt anything more. It is a film I could recommend to Jackass fans, but no one else, just a shame it fails to step out of its comfort zone.
