Johnson’s return excites Lehmann

SYDNEY: Australia head coach Darren Lehmann is relishing the chance to unleash Mitchell Johnson as the fast bowler nears a return ahead of the World Cup.

Johnson has not played since Australia’s Boxing Day Test with India due to a hamstring problem, but is in contention to play in Monday’s tri-series ODI here against the same opponents.

Lehmann’s side have won all three of their games in the tri-nation series, which also includes England, and the return of the International Cricket Council Cricketer of the Year is a further boost for Australia.

Lehmann has been impressed with Johnson’s efforts in the nets, and cannot wait to reintroduce the 33-year-old on Monday or the tri-series final next Sunday.

“He [Johnson] will be close,” said the coach. “He’s been bowling and will be full training tomorrow and hopefully available for selection.

“I’m excited to see how he’s bowling, and that’s the pleasing thing and hopefully he’s back to full fitness and full pace.

“For us it’s about getting him right to play, and back with the lads and enjoying the game.”

Opening batsman David Warner is fit after a hamstring injury, but Lehmann will make a late call on the involvement of Shane Watson.
