Chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha says he will look for ways to make the appointment of judges to the higher court more transparent.
"We'll look into the matter of making appointment of judges to the higher court through discussion, in the light of the constitutional provision," he told a reception accorded to him at the Supreme Court Bar Association and the attorney general's office on Sunday.
Well known as SK Sinha, the new chief justice who took on Saturday, referred to the law on appointment of the judges in India.
He mentioned that the process of appointing judges at the lower court has been independent and transparent. "There is no gap here and no incident of leakage of question papers (for judges' appointment) is expected in future," he added.
The chief justice said benches would be formed through consultation with lawyers and judges.
"I can assure you that the lower court has come under the control of the Supreme Court. It will also be consulted on transfer and other matters," he said.
Justice SK Sinha also stated that he would try to find out 'a harmonious way' to reduce the holidays of the court.
