Somalia has been in turmoil now for the last two decades plus. The Somali people have borne the consequences of conflict, famine and too frequent poor leadership. Consequences are felt and seen in places like Mogadishu and in refugee camps in neighboring states. Many Somalis now live far away from their homeland – just take a taxicab in Washington DC and you might be driven by a Somali. Somalia is not though just being helped from the outside. The UN mourned the death and condemned the killing of humanitarian aid workers just today (December 23, 2011) it seems in an unprovoked and senseless killing: "...Attack took place in Mataban town in Somalia’s central Hiran region, where the two WFP (World Food Program) employees – Muhyedin Yarrow and Mohamed Salad – as well as Abdulahi Ali of the non-governmental organization (NGO) known as Doyale were on a mission to monitor food aid distribution." The humanitarian effort does depend on local Somalis, some of who actually do remember the better times. “But it is painful, still. I can say that, before, this was a peaceful city. It was paradise. Now, these people living here have lost everything, their property, opportunities for education. There are not enough health services. There is no safe drinking water in some areas. I’m one of those who was here in the golden days, when the situation was good. These last 20 years, when the country was devastated by endless and continuous conflict, it is really painful for me, ” says UN OCHA Humanitarian Affairs Officer Ahmed Farah Roble, (Photos Above).
