Kenya's police chief David Kimaiyo offered to retire Tuesday after serving for 34 years amid increased terror attacks across the East African nation.

Kimaiyo told a news conference in Nairobi that his retirement was a personal decision, and added that President Uhuru Kenyatta has accepted his resignation from the National Police Service.

"My retirement has been prompted by personal matters which I have discussed with the president, who has accepted my early retirement," Xinhua quoted Kimaiyo as telling journalists in Nairobi.

His resignation comes amid increased criticism from the public who said he was not doing enough to protect Kenyans from terror attacks by Al Shabaab militants.

Kimaiyo's resignation comes after terrorists massacred 36 Kenyans in the northern border town of Mandera.

The Al Shabaab said the attack was in retaliation for mosque raids that Kenyan security forces carried out last month to weed out extremists.

The attack happened just four hours after three men, all armed with AK-47 rifles, attacked a club in Wajir where they shot dead one person and injured 13 others.
