Ladies First

I went to visit my friend at Brooks School during the Columbus Day weekend. I forced my friend, Palwasha, to go out for a short walk. I love walking at night because after all I am not afraid of the dark anymore. While we were enjoying talking loud, laughing,  and listening to Music we remembered that we have to eat. It was 8 o'clock already and the dining hall was closed. So we decided that we should just walk around. Palwasha wanted to give me a tour of her school anyways. We started with the dining hall , even though it was closed.

We accidentally ran into one of her teachers and his son. While the 9 years old guy wanted to enter the dining hall first , his dad called out " Ladies first!"

I have heard this expression a lot. However, it was more of a joke; not a real thing! I thought he is not serious about it, but the little guy stopped and told us to go first. I was shocked. I said thank you and moved on. However, I discussed the idea of 'ladies first' with my friend. Coming from a country that you have to have a male guarding you most of the time, you have to walk after your father or brother, I really started paying attention to little things, and the little acts.

The next day I saw one of my friend's friend carrying his girlfriend's bag. It was normal for them, but for me it was something totally new.

I went to Boston the next day. I was walking with Palwasha and her tutor. I again noticed the same thing.

Upon my return to Afghanistan, I want to talk about the idea of ' ladies first' in the everyday life. I want men to start respecting women with respecting their own sisters and giving them rights. Every change starts with the act of ordinary people. I want to bring this change and I believe I CAN do it.

LADIES FIRST!
