Perhaps it’s because of her stunning retro Hollywood face or her eerily spellbinding voice, but Lana Del Rey (aka Lizzie Grant) has arrived. Her first album, Born To Die, was recently released in late January and consists of 12 “Hollywood Sadcore” style tracks: tales of dark yet beautifully twisted love stories. The single of the album, Born to Die, recounts a relationship that is far from perfect yet eternally addictive, made even more dramatic by the haunting and emotionally-void way in which it is sung.
The music video is equally as chilling as its soundtrack. Bouncing between a scene of Lana sitting on a throne surrounded by tigers and those of her kissing a tattooed “bad boy” whose inadequate love she can’t seem to shake. The hollow and longing look the singer gives the camera for the duration of the film will send prickly chills across your skin. The musty and romantic lighting adds to the ambiance and makes the colours off the film take on more jewel-tone qualities for a vividly intimate and glamorous effect.
All of Del Rey’s new videos – including those for Blue Jeans and Video Games – contain unique and undeniably gorgeous shots of the singer that alone would make them worth watching, yet each one also has a special element, be it multitudes of random vintage clips mashed together or the sounds of additional speaking tracks over the main song.
