Following his goal against River Plate on Sunday in Yokohama in the Club World Cup final, the Argentine now has 24 goals in 28 finals with FC Barcelona.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man they say. That is certainly true of Leo Messi since his very first final in a Barça shirt, the 2006 Spanish Super Cup against Espanyol in which curiously he did not find the net. From that day forwards, however, Messi has played in 28 different finals, and has scored 24 goals in those games, the most recent of which being the Club World Cup final against River Plate in Yokohama. Messi opened the scoring in that game, setting Barça on their way to a 3-0 victory and their third win in the competition. On a personal level, the Barça number ‘10’ is now tied withAndrés Iniesta on 26 as the blaugrana who has won most trophies.
There have been plenty of other highlights in the Argentine’s career habit of scoring goals in finals. Who could forget his two goals against Manchester United in the Champions League finals of 2009 and 2011, nor his famous strike his chest to give Barça an extra-time winner against Estudiantes in the 2009 FIFA World Club Cup final.
Below we have put together a list of all Leo Messi’s ‘Finals’ and goals:
