"Hazy Eyes"
On this shoot I was apart of the set build crew, our priority was to ensure the set was built and ready for set designers to come in a dress the "room" we had created.
We were creating a managers office for a strip club, it was to be used for a sex scene. The scene involved mainly two actors, the set didn't have to be big but enough that a camera guy could get in and really get every angle he/she could to get the coverage they needed for the scene.
It was a great experience, working behind the scenes of a set build, although its not really a job a production student would usually have in a realistic environment, it would've been left for real set builders such as carpenters. Never the less it was great to be a part of it and not only that it was good learning what actually needs to be in a set for it to look realistic and how the director is imagining it.
Mainly I cut up wood for the set, creating joints to be put on supports of the back of the hardboard we were using for the walls. I also managed to wallpaper a wall with a floral decoration.
This was good for any future drama's i work on, understanding set design will be a great aspect to future productions because it gives me an idea on how long the process will take, especially if there are any difficulties, it gives me an idea how i can get around it and the sort of pricing it will all come to. In terms of designing a set i have learnt that space is always an issue, i will measure and plan out everything before i get on set, previously i have had a problem with space and again on this set there were difficulties fitting everything in. Your mind is always a lot bigger than a room, ensure to think of every possibility before you have to settle with something you don't particularly want/like.
