Over the course of Friday evening I spent my time operating the jib for a live boxing event down in Manchester. The company I worked for were a relatively small production, RokTV who run a series of live broadcasts for Coldwell Boxing. The way everything had been set up with all the cameras linked up to one monitor seemed very professional and organised.
The director, Stewart Lawley was a very friendly individual who has worked on many BBC productions in the past including 'DIck & Dom' and 'I Want To Be A Celebrity.' He provided a very relaxed and stress free environment making me feel very welcome. I never felt intimidated which was my main worry before I got started.
I had a fantastic experience using the jib to follow the boxers walking in and capturing wides of the crowds but although this all sounds like it went smoothly, it didn't. The jib presented itself with its fair share of problems such as balancing it out to make sure that when the arm was raising it did so in a smooth motion. As it was all live, this put a lot of pressure on me as a camera operator. I managed to overcome this by practicing a good two hours before hand until I found a position and movement that felt much more natural.
Overalll, it was great to have another chance to work outside of Uni and really sink my teeth into the real world of Television production. Although TV isn't a form of media I'm particularly interested in I found the confidence and knowledge I gained to be a stimulating experience. Looking forward to the next opportunity I get to work with them again.
