The first team manager scored past the man who is now his assistant at FC Barcelona when Sevilla visited the Camp Nou in the 1996/97 season
There’s a curious story behind Saturday’s game between Barça and Sevilla. Way back in the 1996/97 season, current first team manager Luis Enrique Martínez and his assistant Juan Carlos Unzué were both in action, the former for FCB (managed at the time by Bobby Robson) and the latter in goal for the Andalusians.
Luis Enrique scored the third of the goals in the 4-0 win at the Camp Nou. It came after 79 minutes under peculiar circumstances. Centre backFernando Couto received the ball down the right from Stoichkov and crossed into the Sevilla area. Ronaldo failed to connect properly, but an opportunistic Luis Enrique was standing right behind him and headed home past Unzué.
Luis Enrique also scored the only goal of the game when the two sides had met earlier on in the same season at the Sánchez Pizjuán, this time with a header. But the home keeper that day was Monchi, now technical secretary at the club.
