Hi all!
Not been long since my last blog, but some exciting things are happening at the moment! So I want to keep up to date with everything.
Recently I have been working on a short film called 'lull', with two directors called Harry Bugden and Gavin Cumine. The directors are currently working as 'creative directors' in advertising agencies, working on commercials such as John lewis and fosters.
The short film is based on a poem called 'goodnight moon' which is a beautiful little children's book, which for some people, carry powerful feelings of nostalgia, and for others who can see it as a bran new piece, can appreciate the Beautiful structure and the imagery it resonates. This is the reason that I so strongly wanted to work on this film with the boys. When they told me the script, it really struck a chord, I won't give too much away, but the ending is powerful and really hits home!
So. More about the process so far!
As you may know, I have had plenty of experience working on short films with friends and at university. But this was an entirely new and valuable experience to me! When Harry and Gav approached us, I knew it would be the hardest and biggest leap for me, simply because of what they were already expecting... With this film we couldn't just 'douche' it! What with shooting on 16mm film, and getting completely professional kit and crew, it was going to be a new process entirely for me...
Then When the executive producer had to leave for Japan, I was left alone in production to get the shoot sorted, and havig never worked with film before, there was a little more to work out than I originally thought! I had a fantastic crew lined up to help me out also. 'Theo Garland' as DOP, and Agnieska as Art director, so it was a matter of pulling the rest of the crew in together and making sure nothing was forgotten... And all without going over budget!! (massive thanks to Barnaby Laws from
Panalux for being amazing as always!!)
It was time to pull in everything I had learnt from working as production assistant, and also contact everyone from every company I had built relationships. Until i was thrown in the deep end slightly like I was this time, I didn't realise how much I had come across and how many people I knew!
I had a few mini panics in pre production, and a few times when I thought time was running away with us... But massive thanks also to Natalie Cooke, my production assistant who I could not have done without :-) we got there in the end!!
Shockingly enough... The shoot day ran amazingly smoothly!! Which I was ecstatic over. Most importantly my directors were happy with what they were working with! And hopefully with the final outcome...
At this stage in my career, it's still all about impressions, and I think I'm
Happy with the one I have made for this film. I have been in to see the rushes and seen a very rough edit and it looks fab so far! Film really REALLY does make a difference... Especially on a film which the look really works for, so for the extra effort (and probably money also) it really did pay off.
As soon as I have an edit I can release I'll let you know!! But for now check out the production stills... And watch this space for some stills from the film also!
Until next time, Sorcha.
