Mao’s “Cultural Revolution” Reincarnates in Washington, by Ambassador mo

It’s not the “Tea Party” in the US as much as ideological-theological fundamentalists that are determined to cleanse Washington of unwanted influences. It kind of reminds me of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, an effort at historical revisionism with direction of reversionism to fundamentalist communist principles and to impose a monolithic and simplistic social, economic and political structure, but rebranded as “revolution”. It took China over two decades to recover from Mao's Cultural Revolution. Faux Revolutions, Sharia & Patriotism: Under the umbrella of the “Tea Party” or not, a new politically and economically illiterate elite has seized upon current discontent as the opportunity for their faux revolution. They start by citing America’s Founding Fathers and the US Constitution, but I would suggest that Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and George Mason would at first laugh thinking it all a joke. Then, upon realization that it was not, they would scream in horror at seeing what they put into motion now floundering in large part due to presumed efforts at exorcism of the American soul. Of course, God still has not had the opportunity to respond to the abuse of his name by these fundamentalists, but I can only suggest that he finds no humor in further depriving the poor in favor of the rich. He only could be even less contented with this interpretation of His dominion on Earth than with those who have been trying on the other side of the globe to impose their versions of “Sharia law” in some Muslim majority countries. Putting to the side for the moment misuse of God’s name, the US Constitution and the Founding Fathers, this revolution like Mao’s is exactly the opposite. It seeks to send America back to the lows of exploitive robber barons and religious bigotry substituting for science. Those endorsing today’s “revolution” embrace the populist fire-brand speaking politician William Jennings Bryan who a century earlier sought to prosecute an educator in Tennessee for teaching evolution rather than a literal reading of Biblical creationism. (Ironically Bryan was a Democrat when Republicans represented the American "Progressive" spectrum, and he was ridiculed for his efforts to exploit all things populist including the cross and a bimetallic - silver & gold - monetary system. Coring America's Core Values: Libertarianism is at the core of America’s pluralism, tolerance and virtue through diversity. The new fundamentalists seek to protect the citizen’s Second Amendment right to bear arms, but effectively seek to emasculate First Amendment rights. People can say what they want, as long as it is consistent with their interpretation of God’s and American values. Men can engage in the bedroom as they want, but as long as it is not with another man. America is free for all except those that are not deemed American enough. They want Government to protect them against foreign and/or immoral invasions of ideas, but they demand smaller government especially as it relates to protecting our health, education and access to necessities as food and energy. They claim the high ground in defending America because they can wear a gun holster to a politically rally and paint the current American president as an imposter. On the other hand, they trust US officials regarding what they tell them is happening from Guantanemo to Wikileaks, and challenges to the official line are deemed unpatriotic. The United Nations is the great usurper but the US intelligence budget is kept secret as billions are spent on spying programs that inevitably resemble bottom net fishing in the US and overseas. Check Your Weapons at the Door - Not Your Brains! If US citizens need their weapons to direct at the government and keep it in check, then the battle and country is already lost. Like Mao’s Cultural Revolution, the tendency to seek comfort in reverting to the authentic is a dangerous and self-defeating illusion. Mao is still idealized in China, but do not misinterpret officially promoted myth with the reality of China's current policy and challenges. It could take America another couple of decades to regain its stride, if at all.
