Over 100 whales washed ashore along the 15km stretch of coast near Tiruchendur in Tamil Nadu yesterday. Over 45 of the short-finned pilot whales have died. Many have been saved by local fishermen. Many more whales would have died if not the local fishermen in the area kept putting them back into the sea. Wildlife experts are yet to ascertain the exact cause behind the strange incident. According to them, the whales seemed to have been disoriented as they returned to the shore even after being put back in the water. It might be that two earthquakes on Monday, one of 6.5 magnitude in Philippines and another one measuring 6.9 in Indonesia could have disoriented the whales. However, more evidences are necessary to come to a definite conclusion as to the cause of their death.
