Porter Wins Second Bronze for USA Judo at the IBSA World Games

Antalya, Turkey – On the third day of competition at the 2011 IBSA World Games, Myles Porter (Colorado Springs, CO/US Olympic Training Site at Colorado Springs) won his second consecutive bronze medal in the 100kg division, adding a second medal to USA Judo’s team at this premier event.

“Two medals at the World Games is a big deal,” said Eddie Liddie, Director of
Athlete Performance for USA Judo. Jordan Mouton (Houston, TX, Diamondback Judo/US Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs) went 3-1 in the women’s 57kg division yesterday to take the team’s first bronze at the tournament. “Were really happy to see that the hard work of USA Judo’s staff is paying off, that the pipeline in paralympic judo is beginning to produce the victories,” Liddie said.

“I came here to win, so losing to the Korean was a disappointment,” said Porter. “But I am happy that I was able to come back out and dominate the next match and win the bronze.” Porter began the day with a quick win over Oliver Upmann (GER), arm barring the German in the first minute of the match.
In his second match, Myles faced Aramitsu Kitazono (JPN). The Japanese player was much shorter than Myles, who had difficulty countering his tai otoshi (body drop) throws. In the second minute, Myles managed a beautiful tani otoshi (rear counter throw) for ippon. This put Myles in the semifinals against last year’s gold medalist, Gwang Geun Choi (KOR). Although Myles came out strong against the Korean player, Choi caught Myles with o uchi gari (inner reaping throw) for ippon in the second minute of the match. This loss put Myles in the bronze medal match against Zakir Mislimov (AZE). Mislimov, a very physical player, came out strong, but Myles controlled the pace of the match both standing and on the ground, until he threw the Azerbaijani with tomoe nage (circle throw) for ippon and his second world bronze medal.

“I am very proud of the way Myles bounced back after his disappointing loss to the Korean player,” said coach Scott Moore. “I was glad to see that he was able to refocus and defeat the Azerbaijani player, and bring home another medal for the US.”

This medal ranks Myles in the top 4 in the world in the IBSA rankings, virtually guaranteeing him a slot in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, England. Myles will compete in three weeks at the US Senior National Championships in the able-bodied division, where last year he became the first visually impaired player to earn a medal, a silver in the 100kg division.

Vladimir Putin Junior Team Championship By Mel Appelbaum I was selected to be the referee member of the USAJudo team delegation to the Vladimir Putin Junior Team Championship held in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The competition was held at President Putin’s home dojo, which is the main training center in St Petersburg where he started Judo and Sambo, on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The posters on the walls bear his picture along with Yamashita’s. Yamashita and Putin are frequent visitors. Each of the eight teams had eight players with three foreign teams, USA, Japan, Germany and five domestic teams. Most of the referees were domestic with three from outside Russia; USA, Japan and Lithuania. There was a five day training camp preceding the shiai, which resulted in two US players getting injured and not being able to compete. I attended all the training sessions. The USA team was treated with great respect and given freedom of access to the training center for all training sessions plus regular club practice. I was introduced to the President of the Russian Judo Federation and President Putin’s judo and Sambo coach. Some of the top Russian judokas, past and present practice at this dojo.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our young athletes to see another side of Judo and train with the best. Greg Gutman, one of the US coaches, who comes from St. Petersburg, arranged for pickup at the airport, sightseeing tours of the city and with Mikhail Kozitskiy and Arkady Arinoff provided guidance for Greg Gutman, Mel Appelbaum, Mikhail Kozitskiy the entire trip, especially language and logistics. Greg arranged for a spectacular banquet after the shiai in honor of the US contingent, including all athletes, parents, coaches and referee at a spectacular private club.

Following the banquet, Greg and Mikhail and I boarded an overnight sleeper train to Moscow where we were VIP guests at the First Hand to Hand fighting World Championship. It was a spectacular event. I was asked to evaluate the refereeing methods and make recommendations to the President of the Hand to Hand fighting Federation. A VIP tour was arranged by Greg of the Kremlin, Red square and many parts of this famous city. It was my first trip to the country where my grandparents came from. My next trip is to the World Cup in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in September.
