Messi hits world headlines again

Newspapers in Catalonia, Spain and all over the world were dazzled by Barcelona's display against Bayern, and especially by 'Kaiser Messi'.

FC Barcelona’s defeat of Bayern Munich in the Champions League not only made headlines in Catalonia, but all around the world. Leo Messi was the standout figure after his two remarkable goals ended 77 minutes of deadlock at the Camp Nou.

The three sports dailies printed in Barcelona all hailed the Argentinian on their front pages. Mundo Deportivo ran with “Herr Messi”, while Sport opted for “Gracias Messi!” The Catalan language L’Esportiu proclaimed his “Unstoppable talent”, while the Madrid based Marca spoke of how “Messi devours Pep”.

Catalonia’s general interest papers spoke on similar lines. La Vanguardia used the header “Messi sentences Bayern”, El Periódico had “Kaiser Messi” and ARA emblazoned the word “Unstoppable” next to an image of the Argentinian maestro.

In Germany, meanwhile, Süddeutsche Zeitung also spoke of “Kaiser Messi” and the “break-up of Bayern in 17 minutes”. Bild described the defeat as “the toughest of the Guardiola era”. Frankfurter Allgemeine felt that “Guardiola took a lot of risks... and lost everything” while Kicker noted that “Neuer alone couldn’t stop super Messi”.i”.

Looking around the rest of Europe, French sports paper L’Équipe was yet another to feature “Kàiser Messi”, while the Daily Telegraph in the UK had “Magical Messi” and The Guardian opened its piece with “Messi steals the show to sink Bayern.” Finally, Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport came up with the term “Fantamessi”.
