Metan's Namer Sees Bright Side to China Ad Ban
Posted on at
METAN's Larry Namer Larry Namer, the president of METAN Development Group and the co-founder of E! Entertainment, visited our studio this week to talk about his partnership with Film Annex as well as the the new broadcast regulations that ban commercial breaks from television dramas in China. In a recent article by MarketWatch, we read that the new regulations could dampen the fortunes of Chinese television broadcasters, but may add up to a boon for online video-streaming sites and other new media. Although the news put a damper on TV advertisers and creative agencies, METAN's Larry Namer sees this as an opportunity for the creatives to be more creative and think of new ways to advertise their brands and products. He says, "Maybe this is an opportunity to even get some of the younger viewers back who opted out of TV because the shows moved too slowly and ads were a big intrusion since they rarely had any relationship to the context of the show. Now brand marketers also have to rethink how to effectively deliver their messages. Rethinking and adjusting makes the game interesting. It forces creative people to revisit what has become typical, habitual, and mundane." As long as we have optimists and foreseers like Namer, the entertainment industry will always flourish and good results may come out of restrictive regulations.
