MLADIC - SIXTEEN YEARS HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT
Posted on at
Srebrenica was just one of the United Nations and NATO protected “safe areas” of Bosnia & Herzegovina. Ambassador Muhamed Sacirbey is presently at the United Nations conducting Ambassador’s and other interviews as I send you today’s breaking Mladic arrest information from the United Nations.
Should this be a cause for jubilation? My personal response is “Yes,” but with caveats. Why did Mladic’s arrest take so many years when Mladic had so many opportunities for capture? Is timing coincidental with Serbia’s desire to become part of the EU? Will Mladic open a Pandora’s Box of possible Western Capitols’ pre-existing “deals”?
UN News Centre Reports:
United Nations officials today welcomed the arrest of Serbian war crimes fugitive Ratko Mladic, long sought for his role in the atrocities committed during the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, hailing it as an important step in the fight against impunity.
Mr. Mladic, the war-time leader of the Bosnian Serb forces, was arrested today in Serbia after evading capture for almost 16 years. He is awaiting transfer to The Hague, where he will stand trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
He faces numerous charges, including genocide, extermination, murder, persecutions, deportation, taking of hostages and inflicting terror on civilians, particularly in connection with massacre of up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the supposedly “safe haven” of Srebrenica in July 1995 in one of the most notorious events of the Balkan wars.
“This is a historic day for international justice,” Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said during an event in Paris. “This arrest marks an important step in our collective fight against impunity as well as for the work of the ICTY.”
He commended President Boris Tadic and the Serbian authorities for their efforts in apprehending Mr. Mladic.
A separate statement issued by Mr. Ban’s spokesperson added that the arrest “sends a powerful message that those who are alleged to have committed crimes against humanity may try to evade justice but they will, in the end, be held accountable.”
Secretary-General Office of the Spokesperson, Latest Statements:
“The Secretary-General welcomes today's arrest of Ratko Mladic, former Commander of the army of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He commends President Tadic and the Serbian authorities for this significant step toward ending impunity for those indicted for serious violations of international humanitarian law during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
The Secretary-General's thoughts today are first and foremost with the victims and their families, who have waited almost sixteen years for Mr. Mladic to be brought to justice for crimes including those committed at Srebrenica. This is a historic day for international justice and for the world's collective fight against impunity. It sends a powerful message that those who are alleged to have committed crimes against humanity may try to evade justice but they will, in the end, be held accountable.
This important arrest will enable the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to move closer to completing its mandate. Ending impunity is essential for reconciliation, sustainable peace and justice in the region.”
Injustice has raged too long for the families and survivors of General Mladic’s alleged war crimes. May the World open its eyes and see the Truth.
