"Dad? Can you check under my bed for monsters?"
"Oh of course."
I make a big scene of looking extra hard for the kid.
"All clear," I say with a smile.
"You sure?"
"Positive."
"Thanks Dad! I'm so happy you chose to adopt me. You're the best!"
I flash him one last smile before closing the door. I let out a sigh before making my way to my bedroom. It never gets any easier, but it's either them or me. It's been three years since we made the deal. They swore to leave me alone as long as I deliver one child every year.
They assured me I am safe, but I still kneel down to check under my bed.
