More Floods-Climate Change? By Ambassador mo

New York is experiencing an unusual snow storm and perhaps flood-producing rains in October, only 3 weeks after 80 degrees+ (F) summer-like temperatures. NYC though has it easy compared to a wide global swathe of drowning lands from Central America to Pakistan to Thailand and most of SE Asia. Similar excesses hit parts of Latin America, West Africa, Sri Lanka and most notably Pakistan last year. Australia had its own Noah like catastrophe with broader global consequences for food stocks. (See FILM REPORT - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/extreme-weatherfloods-droughts/24068 ) Drought: On the other extreme, drought ruined crop harvests and caused fires in Euro-Asia’s breadbaskets (Russia and Ukraine in particular). The most devastating consequences are in the Horn of Africa with a famine resulting from conflict as well as drought. 2010 had proven to be one of the deadliest and probably worst natural disaster extremes. (See FILM REPORT –“Natural Disasters 2010-Deadliest?” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/natural-disasters2010-deadliest/24489). Normal Cycles or Climate Change-the Debate The evidence does not yet absolutely prove the case that this is climate change. It may be multi-year cycles. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO)has tried to stay on top of the forecasts and the longer term analysis. (READ – Red Hot Record Temperatures/Too Hot to Handle Debate”- diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/red-hot-record-temperaturestoo-hot-to-handle-diplomatic-debate-by-ambassador-mo/20858 & Also See FILM REPORT –“Red Hot Global Temperatures” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/red-hotglobal-record-temperatures/24139 ) Thailand & Urbanization: The impact for Bangkok and Thailand illustrates how dangerous even small degrees of climate change can be in the face of urbanization and relatively rapid changes in population patterns and concentration. (See FILM REPORT – “Climate Change & Urbanization Dangerous Combo” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/climate-change-urbanizationdangerous-combo/27044 ). According to the WMO, Bangkok will continue to get worse before better. “Spokesperson for the United Nations (UN) World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Clare Nullis told reporters in Geneva today (28 Oct) that a combination of high tides and more rain-related flooding is expected until Sunday. Heavy rainfall in Thailand has resulted in the worst flooding in more than five decades, with 370 people killed and vast swathes of the country’s 29 provinces, including the capital, Bangkok, inundated. More than 2.1 million people are estimated to be affected.” Irreversible Consequences: The impact for some regions/states is being irreversibly felt by their people even before the debate concludes on climate change. In the Pacific, the small island state of Telavi has lost its fresh water even as drowned by the surrounding ocean, (See FILM REPORT – “Survivor Island” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/survivor-island/28784 & See INTERVIEW with Grenada’s Ambassador Dessima Williams - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/un-climate-agenda/20920 ) Lake Chad is dying, the most critical source of fresh water for several countries in the region, (See FILM REPORT - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/the-lake-will-die/24548 Brazil, we think of the Amazon and the jungle. And while one part of country has struggled with floods, another is coping with desertification, a global wide problem, (See FILM REPORT - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/desertification-brazil-mannature/25699 Greenhouse Gases: Whatever any particular scientist derives from it and however a politician chooses to employ it in debate, the data does support one conclusion unequivocally: the globe is dealing with record high greenhouse gases, at least since record keeping. (See FILM REPORT - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/greenhouse-gases-record-levels/23825 ) We had warnings of pending drought in the Horn of Africa for well over a year in advance. We largely opted to ignore it. The consequences are evident. (READ - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/millions-at-risk-in-horn-of-africa-hunger-conflict-starvation-by-ambassador-mo/30697 ). Climate change may not be proven yet in some people's minds, but millions, maybe billions are feeling the effects of it or something like it. If today’s weather extreme causing snow in NYC is part of climate change or not, regardless most of us will survive the consequences, for now. However, millions will not be so fortunate. Making a Bet on Your Rhetoric: I have a proposal for those who opt to ignore or deny climate change – put your wallet where your mouth is. You don't believe that today’s weather extremes are linked to pollution or greenhouses gases - then provide insurance to address the potential environmental and human consequences. Make a bet consistent with your denial rhetoric.
