K2, the world’s second highest mountain, and more challenging to conquer than Mount Everest, the worlds tallest was a triumph over for the first time as a team from Pakistan.
As many as six Pakistani mountaineers Hassan Jan, Ali Durani, Rahmat Ullah Baig, Ghulam Mehdi, Ali and Muhammad Sadiq belonging to Gilgit-Baltistan conquered 8611 meters high, Karakorum 2 (K2), and hoisted the Pakistan flag on top of the mountain. Three Italians were also part of the group accompanying them.
K2 is located along the border between Baltistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China. The expedition was undertaken to mark 60 years since it was first scaled and sponsored by the local Gilgit-Baltistan government and the Italian organisation Ev-k2CNR.Two Italians, Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli , reached the top of K2 on 31 July 1954.
Unlike Mount Everest that has been peaked by nearly 3,500 young and old climbers, K2 has been is much more challenging with roughly 300 making to its tops. Descending from the top is more dangerous accounts to climbers’ death.
Even though, K2 and a few other mountains have already been caught by many mountaineers of Gilgit Baltistan as Guides and High Altitude Porter with foreign teams in tourist movement, this is the first formal expedition in the physical body of a Pakistani team for adventure on K2.
