John Carney on His Autobiographical Musical ‘Sing Street’ and the Influence of the ‘80s
by Erin Whitney a day ago
The Weinstein Co.
As any fan of ‘Once’ can attest, writer, director John Carney is a master at capturing the complexities of love through music. In his latest musical, ‘Sing Street,’ Carney pulls from his own past as a misfit school boy in the 1980s who found solace in music.

Counterpoint: Scooby-Doo Is Not Dumb
by Mike Sampson 2 days ago
Warner Bros.
My colleague, “esteemed” film critic Matt Singer, thinks Scooby-Doo is dumb. I know this because he wrote an article about it. You can read that article here, though I suggest you don’t — you’ll just be wasting your time, because Scooby-Doo is not...

Scooby-Doo Is Dumb
by Matt Singer 2 days ago
Hanna-Barbera
The big pop cultural announcement this morning (via Entertainment Weekly) is that DC Comics is turning a bunch of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons into a new line of comics. DC’s concept is to update these properties for 2016; not to simply continue their adventures as if no time has passed since their 1970s heyday, but to “revitalize the characters in a new day and age.”

SNL Ranked: Ronda Rousey Gets Unfairly Sidelined
by Britt Hayes 6 days ago
NBC
Like Dwayne Johnson and Gina Carano before her, Ronda Rousey is graduating from the ring to the stage, though her turn as SNL host this weekend is the first time she’s really had an opportunity to flex her acting muscles. Unfortunately, the MMA pro is sidelined for much of the episode, her talents underestimated and misused from the moment she walks into Studio 8H. Beck Bennett is seemingly the only cast member who really knows how to take advantage of her skill set, delivering the best sketches of the night. The lack of actual effort to give her something to do does little to disprove the idea that SNL invited Rousey to host based almost entirely on brand recognition. And that’s really too bad. Read on for our ranking of this week’s sketches from best to worst.

by Kevin Fitzpatrick January 22, 2016 @ 4:25 PM
The CW
‘Legends of Tomorrow’ got off to a strong start with last night’s premiere, but one moment from the series debut seemed to stick out as especially ill-devised. Namely, why the hell did ‘Legends’ think it necessary for Victor Garber’s Professor Martin Stein to drug and kidnap his Firestorm partner into joining the mission, and how in the world did the others laugh that off?
