“MUHAMMAD YUNUS BANKS ON AMERICA,” By, SUSAN SACIRBEY

Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Father of Modern Microfinance, banks on America in “To Catch a Dollar.” “To Catch a Dollar, a 2010 Sundance Film Festival selection, documents the birth of Grameen America and the effort to bring Nobel Laureate and Presidential Medal of Honor winner Muhammad Yunus’s revolutionary microfinance program to the United States. The film features stories of women borrowers from around the world – with a focus here in the U.S. on the plight of those struggling to save. It proves it is possible to meet the needs of Americans living without access to affordable financial services, and can fuel a social movement campaign that can go even further. It also educates viewers about the potential for microfinance as a solution to a number of these pressing social challenges. Lastly, the film provides clear and sustainable calls to action that extend the reach of the film and its stories beyond the theatre and into the lives of those who are living in poverty – and those who can help. The event, made possible by support from Google, the Hilton Foundation and others, will include a captivating panel moderated by CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo and featuring Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Kiva.org President Premal Shah and special guest, financial powerhouse Suze Orman. It will also include messages of support from celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Matt Damon, Russell Simmons and others. Audience members will be asked to join efforts to choose and support the first-ever publicly-funded Grameen America branch.” This major event will be shown on March 31 in hundreds of theatres throughout the country. It will “serve as the launch for a multiplatform campaign designed to reframe perceptions on poverty in this country and to connect audiences with financial literacy tools and resources.” I had the personal opportunity and privilege to attend a special premiere of this documentary by Filmmaker Gayle Ferraro in New York City at an earlier date in March and can strongly recommend it. The film is a fitting tribute to the empowerment of women and is in keeping with the UN Millennium Development Goals. In its mission, the UN declared in Article 1 of its Charter: "To achieve international co-operation... in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion." Women's rights are human rights and gender equality is an issue of universal concern. Reflecting the past 100 years, women have come a long way, but there is still much work to do. This year's theme will focus on "equal access to education, training and science and technology - finding a decent pathway to decent work for women."
