Murdoch Losing New Corp? By Ambassador mo

Rupert Murdoch’s two sons failed to gain more than 1/3 of independent shareholders’ votes in elections for News Corp Board reflecting ongoing discontent and the turmoil since the “phone hacking” scandal embroiled the company early this summer. James Murdoch, Deputy COO of News Corp has been called upon to testify again before the UK Parliament regarding the hacking scandal and purported contradictions uncovered since the initial testimony this summer. Rupert Murdoch’s 40% effective control of voting shares insured that son Lachlan (PHOTO in back with father & brother before UK Parliament hearing), as well as James would be elected to the Board, but independent shareholders did not reserve their discontent . They took the dispute public from behind closed Boardroom doors. One third of News Corp. shareholders voted against the election of Rupert Murdoch’s sons to the board, a protest against the family’s control over the media company in the wake of a phone-hacking scandal. “How can they not feel compelled to appoint more independent directors? It’s clear this insider arrangement is the polar opposite of transparency.” According to ?” Julie Tanner, director of socially responsible investing for Christian Brothers Investment Services Inc., Mega pension fund “Calpers” (or California Public Employees’ Retirement System) publicly indicted their vote against Murdoch family members. Proxy advisers and investors including Calpers, the largest U.S. pension fund, had called on the Murdochs to leave the board to bolster independent oversight in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal. It is evident that the “hacking scandal” has not evaporated even as it has been surpassed on headline pages. It is also not clear if any further US Congressional action is forthcoming even as the UK Parliament is planning further hearings. US law enforcement has been called upon to complete its own investigation, but it is not clear where that currently stands. The greatest pressure upon Rupert Murdoch and family could still emerge from within his own boardroom – with Prince Alwaled bi Talal al-Saud (Kingdom Holdings) of Saudi Arabia holding the balance of power and potential challenge to Rupert’s 40%.
