My Birth Place, My Love, Gujranwala City
Gujranwala city is my birthplace and my sweet memory. This city is a divisional headquarter and is a part of the Punjab Province in Pakistan. It is about 62 kilometres towards the north of the provincial headquarter Lahore and 400 kilometres towards the south of the capital Islamabad. It is connected with other parts of the country by GT Road and rail. It the 5th most populous city and the 3rd largest industrial city of Pakistan. It is a city of about 4.5 million people and is the main manufacturing centre for aluminium and stainless steel utensils, iron safes, handmade carpets, textile, electric fans and leather products. Sialkot city is famous for sports good and surgical instruments and is situated 40 kilometres east of this city. Gujranwala is famous for several educational institutions, those are affiliated with the University of the Punjab Lahore. Its history relates it to a Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He was born in this city and then ruled here. This city remained his capital since 1799 when he occupied Lahore. Raja Ranjit Sigh's birthplace is a lofty dome that covers his ashes, is still there in good condition.

Gujranwala city lies between two rivers named Chenab and Ravi. It is home to the world's best rice crop. Its land is very fertile for rice, sugarcane, cotton and wheat crops and is irrigated through the Upper Chenab Canal, that is a part of the canal network of the Panjab province in Pakistan. The city is also famous for a Medical College, a sugar mill, 6 rice mills, glass printing work and the wrestling competitions. A small industries estate was established in the 1960s, where different industrial units are working day and night and contributing to the country's economy. This city was annexed by British rule in 1849 and remained under that government until 1947 when Pakistan won its independence.

I myself, whenever see the electric fans, washing machines, ceramics, tannery products (like, wallets, shoes, bags, seat covers, sofas), bentwood chairs, sports goods (like cricket ball and bat, hockey sticks, footballs), Glass utensils with beautiful printing work, I can't believe that this city has made so much progress in the previous two to three decades. The small industrial estate in Gujranwala has uplifted the economy of the country and its people.
The traditional foods cooked in Gujranwala are well known for their spicy taste and flavour. Chicken and Mutton-Karahi, Biriani, Haleem, Sajji are the traditional dishes prepared in every home. The Homemade Ice Cream, called Kulfi, and served on sticks is very specific. Confectionary items are mostly traditional and specific to this region.
Wrestling is a traditional Game of Gujranwala city, Here the word famous wrestler, The Great Gama and many others were born who won the world wrestling titles. The local and international tourists especially watch these wrestling competitions called Dungles and enquire from the wrestlers about their special diet, they use to strengthen their muscles and stamina,

Jinnah Stadium Gujranwala is a world-famous sports centre for international cricket. It is also used for political rallies on the eve of country's general elections. It was beautifully designed by the local architects. The last OID cricket match played here was between Pakistan and Srilanka in 2000, after that there has been long pause due to the terroristic attack on Srilankan cricket team in Lahore Pakistan, but now a very positive change has begun and soon there would be a revival of these sports events.
