The Institute Of Motion is setting the fitness industry on its ear. I know that's a bold statement and I don't mean to sound condescending to any fitness professionals, or fitness enthusiasts, that are reading this. On the contrary, I want to help guide you in a positive direction towards better fitness, increased longevity, and overall better athletic performance.
I’m lucky to be in beautiful Solana Beach San Diego, where I just completed my Level 1 Mentorship at the Institute Of Motion.
Training your body is a science and what science is telling us is that understanding how your Fascial system ( connective tissue ) works will further enhance your muscular system, nervous system and cardiovascular system.
Given the fact, that most people lift weights at home, or in traditional gyms that have machines means, you are mostly, limited to linear movements. A few examples of linear movements are traditional squats, dead lifts, bench presses, shoulder presses, leg presses, which are all great exercises and will continue to stay useful.
Unfortunately, an exercise regimen, based solely on repetitious linear movements, is becoming less and less valuable, causing your fascial system to become rigid.
Believe it or not, pain should almost never be a factor in exercise, if your program is diverse. Our morphology is set up to capture energy, so we must work at different joint angles, plus variability of movements and loads.
By varying your movements and loads, you drive old water from your tissue and allow new water to be sucked back in. Therefore, creating stiffer and stronger collagen fibers than before. Remember, your Fascial system is omni-directional and should be trained as such. Original, creative and inventive motion, will become more valuable in the very near future.
One terrific fitness tool you can use is called the ViPR. The ViPR is the new way to work out. It may look like a length of discarded pipe but it is set to be the fitness craze of the future. The ViPR – which is pronounced 'viper' and stands for Vitality, Performance and Reconditioning – is in fact rather like a Swiss Army knife of exercise gadgets.
ViPR is also a wonderful apparatus to continue doing the exercises you love, that are linear loaded movements. For example, a snatch lift.
This form of Loaded movement based resistance training provides the body with an ability to adapt to every day daily life movement demands, as simple as, allowing you to jump over a NYC slushy puddle with out pulling a muscle and injuring yourself.
There’s a void in strength and conditioning programs and that is loaded movement training. This can be done in many ways, not just with ViPR. Think about farmers, why are they so strong? What demands are placed on them? They pick up and move things all day long, while never repeating the same movements, or landing in the same positions, which allows their fascial system to work synergistically as one whole unit. Great news is that you don’t need a ViPR. You can use dumbbells, barbells, TRX, medicine balls, even multi-directional jumps.
The idea here is that you need to move daily. When you exercise you express your DNA in a better way. As good as movement is for you, being a couch potato is equally as bad for the expression of your DNA.
A well-balanced training program will result in less stress on your body in one plane of motion. Now, get up off the sofa and get MOVING!
