Today, November 17th, is National Baklava Day.

Baklava is a type of sweet pastry common in many countries in the Middle east that were part of the former Ottoman Empire - the name comes from an Ottoman Turkish word.

This is a rather sticky pastry, that is made from layers of filo that are filled with chopped nuts and that is sweetened with honey or syrup. The pastry may simply have one layer of chopped nuts, of which different types are used, or many, interspersed between multiple layers of pastry.
