Today, October 31st, is National Caramel Apple Day.
Not to be confused with candy or toffee apples, these are also known as taffy apples.
An apple on a stick - apples such as Granny Smith which have a tart taste and are quite firm are preferred - is dipped or rolled in hot caramel, although mass produced apples have a sheet of caramel wrapped around the apple and then heated.
The apple can then be dipped in other ingredients whilst warm. With the apples becoming more associated with Halloween, they are more often seen during this period.
