Today, September 14th, is National Eat a Hoagie Day.
What is a hoagie? Well, it's a type of sandwich that is known by other names, such as the submarine sandwich. The name hoagie originated in the Philadelphia region of the US. One explanation is that it came from the Hog Island shipyard, and was called the Hog Island Sandwich, then Hoggies and finally hoagies.
These sandwiches are made from a long roll of Italian or French bread which is either split open width-wise or opened on one side. The sandwich is then filled.
One of the most well known types of hoagie worldwide is those served at Subway Sandwiches.
