Today, November 28th, is National French Toast Day.
French toast is quite an old dish and actually predates the existence of France with the earliest recipes dating back to the 4th or 5th centuries.
French toast is a type of fried bread, and can also be known as eggy bread. It can be eaten as both a sweet or savoury dish, depending on the ingredients.
The bread slices are dipped into a mixture containing beaten eggs and possibly milk or cream. They are then fried on both sides until brown.
Sweet French toast will have things such as cinnamon, sugar and milk added to the mixture, whilst savoury can have salt. They can be topped with sweet or savoury sauces or toppings, including syrups, honey, cheese and cooked meat, as appropriate.
