Today, November 6th, is National Nachos Day.
Nachos are a, usually snack, dish that originates in Mexican food.
The most basic nachos are comprised of tortilla chips, which are corn tortillas cut into triangles and then fried, nacho cheese or grated cheese (melted) and/or salsa (a tomato based sauce).
There are many other toppings that can be added. Jalapeño peppers are a favourite, but other sauces such as guacamole (an avocado based sauce) and sour cream can be added.
More toppings such as chilli (such as bean, beef and chicken) and refried beans to name a couple can increase the size of this dish from mere snack level to that of a substantial meal in itself.
Nacho kits are readily available, and often consist of tortilla chips and sauce. Cheese has to be bought separately.
