Today, January 19th, is National Popcorn Day.
Popcorn is a type of maize whose kernel that is heated until it expands with a "pop," hence the name. It is one of the oldest types of corn known, dating back thousands of years.
Despite its reputation as an unhealthy food, popcorn itself can actually be a healthy snack. What makes it unhealthy is all the stuff that is put on it, such as butter, toffee or salt, all of which can have negative effects on health, especially when too much is eaten. It can be either savoury or sweet depending on what is added. Unfortunately, it is also quite boring when nothing is added to it.
