The NATO has been active in the higher education system in Afghanistan since 2006. The Science for Peace and Security Program (SPS) of NATO promotes and encourages projects with the expertise of the NATO countries while helping to bring security and peace to Afghanistan. Afghan Universities have been connected to the Virtual Silk Highway project (NATO) since 2006, whose mission is to connect Afghan Universities and higher education institutes to the Internet and to facilitate the link to the global knowledge society. The Silk Highway project has become one of the biggest projects in the IT Department of the Ministry of Higher Education with the mission to provide Internet for 22 public universities and about 85,000 students.
They created a three-step plan to implement this project in 22 universities in Afghanistan:
1. Provide Internet access
2. Establish a Campus network
3. Provide hardware for the faculties
Film Annex and Citadel joined forces in a similar project for high schools to contribute to the Education system of Afghanistan by building Internet classrooms, as part of the Afghan Development Project. Film Annex also has a four-step plan to implement this project in 40 high schools, and to connect 160,000 Afghan students to the global community.
1. Provide Internet access
2. Establish a PC pool with hardware equipment
3. Provide a social media curriculum to train teachers and students. 4. Reward financially Educational institutions and Students
Film Annex and Citadel recently opened the first Internet classroom in the Baqnazarqah school and started to work on the second school at Houz–e-Karbas. Film Annex's Founder and President, Mr. Francesco Rulli, wants to increase the number of children who can benefit from global connectivity and education in Afghanistan.
