Nepotism,Cronyism And Reference Culture in Afghanistan

Corruption in Afghanistan is widespread and problem that is growing rapidly with no stopping although steps have been taken by government and Non government organizations to stop corruption. Afghanistan has jumped to 175 from 174 on most corrupt nation on worldwide list. Corruption has increased with passage of time and has given rise to nepotism, cronyism and other problems that lead to social injustice.

One of the social evil of corruption is nepotism and cronyism where merit is neglected and those people are selected with no proper qualification. Talking to some of my friends who had been victim of nepotism and cronyism, " My brother graduated last year,he did bachelors in civil engineering. when he applied for job in Afghanistan, he was asked to pay bribe of 7000$ to get selected for that post" Concept of meritocracy has been ruined and people with no qualification are employed because of culture that is prevailing in Afghanistan giving rise to nepotism, cronyism.

More Over scholarships in Afghanistan are awarded to relatives and friends with those deserving students being neglected of what they deserve. Thousands of scholarships are awarded to Afghanistan on annual basis which are awarded through government of Afghanistan. I met with one of my friend working in higher education department, pledging anonymity " Scholarships are sold here, i can buy you any scholarship you want, just money is needed" All those poor and deserving students who cannot continue study are deprived of these golden opportunities by these elite class bureaucrats who awards their relatives and friends with scholarship where they are awarded with free education and stipend as well.

There is need of concrete steps to end corruption and country like Afghanistan where people have limited access to information, it is very important to educate people about effects of corruption on any country and economy of that country. Those involved in corruption should be dealt with iron hands and no one should be exempted of this. Awareness should be created about corruption and compaigns should be run to help fight this problem.
