In 1997 Marc Randolph on the left and Reed Hastings on the right co-founded Netflix to offer online movie rentals.
In 1999 Netflix launched the subscription service offering unlimited rentals. Netflix is now the world's leading internet television network. With more than 33 million members in 40 countries, viewing more than one billion hours of original series, movies and TV shows for a low monthly price. Netflix members can watch as much as they want, anywhere, anytime, on almost any internet connected screen. Members can pause, resume, and play, all without commitments or commercials.
Netflix has also played a prominent role in independent film distribution, through a division called Red Envelope Entertainment. In late 2006 Red Envelope Entertainment also expanded into producing original contents with filmmakers.
Netflix's growth was fueled by the fast expansion of DVD players in households. By 2004 nearly two-thirds of U.S. homes had a DVD player. Netflix capitalized on the rapid expansion of the DVD into U.S. homes, integrating the potential of e-commerce and the internet, to provide catalogs and services that mortar and brick retailers could not compete with.
On September 22, 2010 Netflix launched their stream only service in Canada, making it their first expansion into international markets. And from there they started expanding into more international territories.
As of right now Netflix currently has exclusive pay-tv deals with mini-major and major movie studios. Films featured on watch instantly include recent releases from DreamWorks Animation, Open Road Films, Relativity Media and its subsidiary Rogue Pictures, The Weinstein Company, Film District and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Epix also signed a five year deal with Netflix.
Netflix is available on the Roku set top device, video game consoles, Blue-ray Disc players, televisions, and hand held devices and is also supported by various Web Browsers.
