New Countries Elected to UN’s Human Rights Council, by Ambassador mo

Nicaragua was not elected while Chile, Costa Rica and Peru were from the Latin American Group. From the Eastern Europe Group, Czech Republic and and Romania won while Georgia lost. The other winners for a 3 year term to the 47 member body included Austria, Benin, Botswana, the Republic of Congo, and Kuwait (all first time Members with Costa Rica). Others elected include Burkina Faso, India, Indonesia, Italy, and Philippines. Although the UN Human Rights Council works out of Geneva, the election is executed at UN HQ in New York, (as is the case with all such elections. This year 4 countries were elected in the African category, four in the Asian States grouping and three from Latin America and the Caribbean, while two countries were chosen from Eastern Europe and two from the Western European and other States grouping.
