New Darfur Air Strikes-UN/AU by Ambassador mo

Sudanese military apparently executed air strikes against a village in Darfur, this time striking a settlement in the north of the war-torn region, the joint United Nations-African Union mission in Darfur today. This follpws conspicuously upon the heels of humanitarian and human rights workers being denied access to certain areas. The Report from the UN-AU Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) follows: “UNAMID peacekeepers based in Kuma, located approximately 100 kilometers northeast of El Fasher, North Darfur, are currently en route to the nearby village of Sukamir, where an air strike by Government forces was reported yesterday afternoon. The team will attempt to collect information on possible casualties and newly displaced persons.” The Sudan Government has suspended UNAMID flights to many areas of North Darfur, citing security concerns. (From UNAMID & UN News Centre Sources) The latest attacks took place two days after Government forces conducted air strikes in South Darfur, bombing the town of Labado and the village of Esheraya. Sudanese humanitarian officials have also restricted the movement of aid workers – including those serving with UNAMID and UN humanitarian agencies – in South Darfur, citing security threats and ongoing military operations. Darfur has been subjected to ongoing conflict and large-scale displacement since fighting broke out between rebels, Government forces and allied militiamen in 2003. An estimated 300,000 people have been killed and as many as 2.7 million others displaced. Several efforts at peace have been initiated including the “Doha Mediation,” but with little success.
