New IMF Chief to be Investigated, by Ambassador mo

Posted on at

Starting to look more like a "police lineup"? French Court has formally started investigation of Christine Lagarde for abuse of authority regarding allegations of illegal political favors while she served as France’s Finance Minister. Such investigations are not particularly unusual and perhaps themselves politically motivated; however this comes at an embarrassing time, one month into Lagarde’s tenure as new IMF Chief. Regardless of result, it hurts the IMF after the sexual assault arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as well as Lagarde. France's President is also implicitly implicated. (PHOTO - Starting to Look like "Police Lineup"?). Inevitably it may also weaken the European hold on the top job at the IMF emboldening a more serious challenge from the “developing” world, probably Asia, whenever the next election takes place. We are in no better position to ascertain the validity of the allegations regarding Lagarde. Our comments are in part jest, but the appearance of impropriety, even a mere prospect of a problem can be unsettling. Rather than have an interest in tearing down the powerful, the leaders of our political and financial cornerstone institutions, our own welfare is linked to the image of stability. Another element of uncertainty, when the globe is especially challenged by crisis from Eurozone sovereign debt to ongoing US budget fight, can become a tipping point. There is also a sense, and in my opinion, reality of growing risk of global economic slump, not necessarily recession but a stagnation experienced very differently by the haves and have nots.
