New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has his eye on the revenue generated by an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event held in the Empire State. Financial experts agree holding a UFC event at Madison Square Garden or in upstate New York could generate more than $28 million dollars.
“We’re looking for an economic boost wherever we can find it. MMA may generate economic activity,” said Cuomo. “New York has a big viewership for MMA now. I understand the flip-side but I think it’s something that should be pursued definitely.”
The Governor also said he hopes to re-address the issue before the end of the current legislature session in June. The topic has not been brought up in his recent budget negotiations with legislative leaders.
Lorenzo Fertita said in a statement that he was pleased that Governor Cuomo recognizes the enormous economic impact legalization of the UFC in New York could bring. “Other Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promoters, including Bellator and World Series of Fighting are as eager as we are to put on shows in New York,” said Fertita.
