News Corp & Murdoch - International Face-off, by Ambassador mo

News Corp may still face its biggest challenge to survive in current form from outside the United Kingdom. News Corps’ problems in the UK have been boiling over for the last couple of weeks over disclosures into secret and illegal hacking of personal records, bank accounts and telephones. The UK Parliament has issued a request for Rupert Murdoch, son James Murdoch and head of UK publications Rebekah Brooks. However, only Brooks is legally compelled to appear, as she is the only British citizen of the three. US Citizen & US Politics: Rupert Murdoch became a US citizen a couple of decades earlier in order to legally qualify as majority owner of Fox. It is now several US Congress persons who want to investigate if News Corps many tentacles, including the UK based World of the News” engaged in hacking into private information of US citizens and particularly “9/11” victims (British or American). This is more than not likely to end up as a subpoena to appear before the US Congress, and one that Rupert Murdoch could not legally avoid, as in the UK. News One has media operations all around the globe, from India and Hong Kong to Italy and Latin America, besides the UK, US and its original home base in Australia. Also, the media is more than just television and papers but also film production and magazines. In each of the countries where it has been operating News Corp has made enemies and allies. It is frequently focused on opinion even more than an objective reporting of the news. This has won it many viewers in the US, particularly among right of center audiences, and of it has been an ally of Republican politicians. So one might expect that it would be shielded from tough scrutiny by such allies. However, some of these Republicans and “Tea Party” activists might not appreciate being held to the Fox standard. Some Fox “commentators” as Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck had become too powerful for the likes of those Republicans who might find themselves being second-guessed by a purported ally. My guess is that just about every center or left politician but also some of Fox’s presumed political allies might not mind having News Corp’s teeth chiseled down a bit. A weakened Rupert Murdoch and the current manifestation of News Corp might though face a challenge from two other international sources. While News Corp is a US (Delaware registered company); it still trades on Australian exchanges. Some Australians feel a bit dismayed that Murdoch abandoned his Australian home base (even if many operations continue there), while others have become ever more antagonized by his politics and methodology. The Prince & Balance of Power: The second largest shareholder in News Corp, after the Murdochs, is Prince Alwaled bi Talal al-Saud (Kingdom Holdings) of Saudi Arabia. The Prince (BOTTOM PHOTO) has consistently expressed confidence in Rupert Murdoch’s business leadership. However, it is not clear how supportive he could be of News Corps’ more standard anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bias. The Prince may hold the balance of power, but there is no challenger yet evident on the horizon to face-off against Rupert Murdoch. Ironically, James Murdoch may have been the most obvious challenger as well as successor to his father, (as is frequently the dual role of sons in an imperial hierarchy). However, James Murdoch is himself wounded by the scandal and perhaps more directly implicated in failures of management or unprincipled leadership. Regardless, it is Rupert Murdoch’s head that his enemies and maybe more than a few of his presumed allies want. There is blood in the air, and Rupert Murdoch’s wounds and age make him vulnerable more than ever. His holdings and adversaries are spread across countries and continents. He is bigger than “Citizen Kane,” and his cross-border holdings make his survival as head of News Corp into an international affair not even foreseen in film and myth.
