Bouncer Chronicles (www.bouncerchronicles.com) reports the bill to legalize professional mixed martial arts (MMA) in New York State will not be voted on by the State Assembly this year.
This is the fourth straight year in which the State Senate passed the bill and the Assembly failed to bring it to the floor for a full legislative vote. Two weeks ago the state of Connecticut and the country of Canada passed legislation that would sanction MMA events. This leaves New York State as the only entity in North America with a ban on the sport.
Bouncer Chronicles (http://www.filmannex.com/webtv/jamesgorman) reported in March the New York State Senate once again approved the bill to legalize MMA and regulate the sport by its widest margin ever. However, it failed to gain support in the State Assembly despite having sixty four sponsors.
According to State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a noted opponent of the bill, the decision to exclude it from the current legislative session was made after a meeting of the Democratic Conference.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta said in a statement “I guess New York’s loss will continue to be New Jersey’s Massachusetts’s, Pennsylvania’s and Toronto’s gain”
