On 27th September 1975, Jamaican reggae stars Bob Marley and the Wailers entered into the European singles charts for the first time with their song No Woman, No Cry, which entered the UK singles' chart. The song's highest position was number 22.
No Woman, No Cry is certainly an iconic, and familiar, song to many, even those who aren't necessarily familiar with Jamaican reggae, yet its' performance at the time wasn't that impressive, merely reaching 22. The song has had continual exposure ever since, as well as being covered many times, and has done better on re-release. Bob Marley's work became internationally famous, he later received the Jamaican Order of Merit, the country's third highest honour which can be held my no more than 15 living people, and reggae entered the international mainstream.
