Norway Terror-Attack Against Open, Multicultural Society, by Ambassador mo

Posted on at

Perpetrator of Norway’s terror was vehemently anti-Muslim, anti-immigration and anti-multiculturalism. The killer perhaps reflects a broader rising European xenophobia and intolerance. While the phenomenon may be relatively new to the modern era, the foundations appear to be based in something similar to the Nazi-era: fascist ideology mixing with mythology (neo-Christian and pre-Christian) to arouse notions of superior and inferior ethnicities and races. Norway: Welcoming Refugee & Model of Freedom: Norway has traditionally been one of the more generous foreign aid contributors as well as supporters of multilateral institutions as the United Nations. With vast energy based resources, it has been sometimes referred to as the Saudi Arabia of Europe. It has though a more open and “progressive” society in most things from women’s roles to media freedoms. It has also been one of those countries that has welcomed a large number of Bosnians & Herzegovinians (mostly Bosniaks or Bosnian Muslims) over the last two decades who were forced to flee their homes due to ethnic cleansing and genocide.(Ironically they were targeted in BiH as not belonging to Europe because of their "Muslim identity" regardless of adherence to Islamic religion) With the Nobel Peace Prize headquartered in the capital Oslo, it is seen by most as a model of openness and freedom. However, my Bosnian contacts have indicated to me signs of rising intolerance and resistance to traditional shared values of openness. Muslims, including Bosnian Muslims, have become increasingly subject to hate speech. Perhaps using the pretext of “Islamic terror,” the new hate groups of Norway and more broadly Europe have been given a seat at the table of mainstream political discourse. They have used this legitimacy to further the trend of intolerance and to choke of freedom. (Photo Above - Twitter of “homegrown” Norwegian terrorist Anders B. Breivik) Feeding of Each Other’s Rhetoric: Al-Qaeda-Muslim & Christian Hate Groups: In the former Yugoslav wars and many of those defined as ethnic or religious, the extremes on polar opposites feed upon each other’s rhetoric. Al-Qaeda and its mirror opposite, the European and American far right, have a very similar message – “get foreigners and non-believers” out of our Muslim/Christian lands. Also, as is in “Muslim majority” countries, the terror in Norway this time consumed mostly indigenous Norwegian lives, but this instance is especially barbaric because so many children were targeted, even as compared to the Nazi era. (Norway had its own Nazi Party and domestic nurtured anti-semitism before and during the Nazi occupation of Norway, and Norwegian fascists/collaborators also murdered many countrymen and Jews). Terror today does not have a new face, a brown face or bearded face but the same old face of hate and intolerance. Our condolences to the families and all people of Norway who have directly or indirectly suffered through this heinous crime.
