War is a curse and peace is a blessing. The whole world is making slogans that no war but peace is the solution of human problems. But it is strange that two South Asian powers have embarked upon a course old in nature and obsolete by function, i.e. the course of war and deterrence.
India and Pakistan denoted its nuclear weapons on 11th and 28th May of 1998, receptively. Thus South Asia entered into a new era of nuclearization which the world was already familiar.
NEED FOR THE NUCLEARIZATION OF SOUTH ASIA:
States usually go for the attainment of nuclear power because of these reasons.
1. For military security.
2. Political prestige.
3. For economic benefits.
4. Domestic pressure and compulsion.
INDIA PERCEPTION:
India aim of becoming a nuclear power was all expressed by prominent Indian strategist, subramanyum in the pursuing paragraph.
“India had to go to nuclear due to these main reasons.
1. Indian’s strategic competition with china.
2. To reduce dependency on foreign powers in the field of weapons, and
3. To embrace image on international arena or level.”
PAKISTAN’S PERCEPTION:
Pakistan was compelled by some very serious factors to conduct nuke tests. Following are those important factors.
1. Due to Indian explosion, arised nuclear instability in the region, therefore Pakistan denoted nuclear devices to maintain the balance of power.
2. Another powerful factor in driving Pakistan towards such an extreme action was psychological pressure from India.
3. India has proved herself to be traditional and historical opponent of Pakistan. So far the bad blood between these countries and for Geo-political conditions of South Asia, exploding nukes was necessary.
4. It was of high importance that Pakistan felt an immediate threat of attack from India. Pakistan nuclear installations were under the target of Indian Air Force. It was reported in many newspapers that on mid-night 28th May 1998. Israeli aircraft landed over Indian airport near to Pakistan borders.
NUCLEAR WEAPONS INVENTORIES:
Both India and Pakistan have their production of nuclear material, refined war head, design, accurate delivery system, assigned command and control of responsibility, platform for nuclear operations etc.
Quantity is never counted. Nuclear devices and its launching systems should be sophisticated enough to hit enemy effectively and accurately.
Pakistan is sufficiently rich in uranium to deploy about 30 nuclear weapons. Compared to Pakistan India has plutonium inventory which is sufficient for go to 180 nuclear weapons.
