Thanks in part to a pair of huge summer singles and a star-making performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, the Weeknd's new LP Beauty Behind the Madness cruised to Number One on the Billboard 200, compiling the second-bestselling week of 2015 on its way to the top spot. Abel Tesfaye's latest sold 326,000 total albums in its debut week, giving the Weeknd his first Number One album. Only Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late, which sold 535,000 copies in its first week, outsold Beauty Behind the Madness this year, Billboard reports.
The Weeknd's third major label album was boosted by the success of the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack smash "Earned It" and "Can't Feel My Face," the recipient of heavy airplay on Apple's new Beats 1 after the singer debuted the track at the Apple Music announcement in early June. Since then, Beauty Behind the Madness has spawned two more singles, "The Hills" and "Tell Your Friends." Beauty Behind the Madness also improves on the Number Four debut of 2012's Trilogy and Kiss Land's Number Two peak in 2013.
Halsey's Badlands debuted at Number Two as the "New Americana" singer's debut LP sold 115,000 copies, giving Astralwerks their highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 in the label's 22-year history. Other new entries this week include Maddie & Tae's Start Here at Number Seven, Beach House's Depression Cherry at Number Eight and Ben Rector's Brand New at Number Nine.
Taylor Swift, like the Weeknd, was the recipient of a post-VMA boom as1989 rose from Number Seven to Number Four after "Bad Blood" took home Video of the Year and the new music video for "Wildest Dreams" debuted.1989's sales doubled over last week as Swift sold another 44,000 copies of her latest album. Last week's Number One, Disturbed's Immortalized, stumbled down to Number 10.
