One Night Stand

My favourite and undoubtedly most successful film on my channel is One Night Stand.

Made in May 2010, you may have seen this film on the channel of director Jack Tew as it was a collaborative effort between the pair of us.

A university project, we wanted to create a simple but effective film that would entertain an audience. We banded around several ideas and even began pre-production on a film based on a man trapped in a hole...

Unconvinced with our script and how much work would be needed for it in what had become a relatively short space (the deadline was now less than 2 weeks away - this was not down to laziness but more down to far too much procrastination over ideas and the fact we were also creating individual films simultaneously (Mine was Thick As Thieves - Check it out on my channel!!!)).

It was at this point that Jack re-visited another idea, one about a girl waking up in a guys bedroom and immediately needing to find a way to escape without waking the guy. Its simple, funny and everyone can relate it. I couldn't help but feel it was something very close to Jack's heart, maybe he's been in that situation a few too many times.

We quickly whipped up a script and began scouting for the right location to shoot in. Our university had a shoot studio, however it was fully booked up for the rest of the semester, we were also acutely aware that we didn't really have the time to completely build a set. We soon decided the best way forward was to find somebodies bedroom as it would have all the furniture required and despite potentially being quite cramped to shoot in, the crampted nature could hopefully translate into the film.

Our resident sound engineer, Thomas Kennedy, offered to lend us his bedroom and we set about filling it with as much 'laddish' stuff as we could. We were very clear from the offset that we wanted every part of the set to be covered with posters and pictures and anything else suitable in order to create as much colour and vibrancy as we could for the background. One of things i'm most proud of from the feedback I have received since making the film is that people genuinely believe it to be a somebodies actual room, decorations et al and have no idea that everything has been put there for by design.

We recruited an actor and actress previously used on other films, Sam Thompson for the 'guy' character (also stars in Thick As Thieves - Check it out!!) and Charlie Truman for the 'girl' character. They were brilliant considering the exposed nature of the shoot, Sam was oddly comfortable with lying in bed naked all day...can't imagine why. One key element we always wanted to maintain was a lack of dialogue, this film is designed to be a quiet and claustrophobic in order to engage the audience.

The shoot day was remarkably smooth despite being thrown together so last minute, we managed to fit a jib in the room which was perfect for the birds-eye-view shots with the couple in the bed. Lighting was relatively easy to fill the room and I was particularly happy with the flashing bar light in the corner...mostly because for the majority of the shoot I am under the bed controlling the lighting box that made it flash.

After shooting everything in one day, including several endings (we hadn't decided on how to finish the film at this point) we quickly hit the edit and began to assemble the film. Fortunately the simple chronology of the film, girl wakes up, tries to escape, gets caught, the edit was relatively easy to put together.

In the end we got a first for the film (im afraid I don't know what thats equivalent to in America, but its the best mark you can get) and we were very proud of this considering how last minute the film was put together. I think the film is proof that you don't have to go OTT to create an interesting, fun and engaging piece of cinema, all you need is a simple idea that anyone can relate to, it doesn't need to be dialogue heavy, the best way to tell a story is through what is happening on screen.

Funnily enough last year someone sent me a link to a film on you tube and to my surprise it was an complete copy of One Night Stand by a group of danish students, when I say copy, I mean every detail was duplicated from shots to set to story, it was incredible. If you're gonna try and copy the idea at least be a bit more subtle about it.
