“OPEN SEASON ON JOURNALISTS” By, Susan Sacirbey

Yakhya Magomedov and Nasrullah Afridi are two more names to add to the memorial wall of journalists who died violently in their missions. This time, the sites were Dagastan and Pakistan. In this season of discontent, riots, demonstrations and war, journalist warriors fighting for freedom of expression, truth, and open societies are not immune to the bullet. UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova, condemned the murders. Mr. Magomedov was the magazine editor of “As-Salam.” He was shot four times while leaving his brother’s home near Khasavyurt. From UNESCO News Source: “The news of Yakhya Magomedov’s killing is troubling,” the Director-General said. “The death of a journalist in violent and unexplained circumstances is always a setback for freedom of expression and freedom of the press. I deplore this killing and call on the authorities to investigate this murder and bring those responsible for it to justice.” “Published in Russian and six Caucasian languages and distributed by volunteers, As-Salam magazine deals above all with religious beliefs and practices and has a print run of 90,000 copies. It is published by an organization called the Spiritual Leadership of the Muslims in Dagestan.” Mr. Afridi, a Khyber News Agency journalist, was killed in a car explosion. The President of the Tribal Union of Journalists, Mr. Afridi also worked for Pakistan Television and the leading Urdu newspaper, “Mashreq.” Fleeing threats from militant groups, he was in Peshawar when killed. Since 2002, at least 15 journalists have been victims to targeted assassination, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Ironically, Mr. Afridi was killed a week after President Asif Ali Zardani of Pakistan promised to pursue justice for slain journalists on assignment. To Yakhya Magomedov and Nasrullah Afridi and to all who seek truth, justice, freedom of expression, and open societies, and act upon these principles, you are our Heroes and we salute you. -----By, Susan Sacirbey Face Book: Diplomatically Incorrect and Diplomat Artist Twitter: DiplomaticallyX More Reports: “Heroes in Search of Truth & Their Ultimate Sacrifice,” By, Susan Sacirbey diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/heroes-in-search-of-truth-and-their-ultimate-sacrifice-by-susan-sacirbey/27954 ---“Attacks on Press” – diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/attacks-on-press/24719 ---“Attacks on WikiLeaks/UN Human Rights Commissioner” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/wikileaksun-human-rights-commissioner/23505
