A PALE, SANDY-COLOURED FUR CLOAKS THIS BAT AND MERGES IT WITH ITS DESERT SURROUNDINGS IN WESTERN NORTH AMERICA. IN SUMMER IT FAVORS DAY ROOSTS IN ROCK CREVICES OR BUILDINGS.

EMERGING LATE IN THE EVENING THE PALLID BAT USUALLY FLIES NEAR THE GROUND. IT SEAMS TO HOVER,AND IT LANDS OFTEN.UNIQUELY, IT FEEDS ALMOST ENTIRELY OFF THE DESERT FLOOR, PREYING ON CRICKETS,GRASSHOPPERS, BEETLES NOW AND THEN A LIZARD OR ABOVE A SCORPION.

BURNING THE NIGHT IT HANGS AT REST IN OPEN SHELTERED SPOTS  SUCH AS BRIDGES, PORCHES, OR ROCK OVERHANGS.WHERE IT WINTERS IN UNCERTAIN A FEW HIBERNATION SITES, SIMILAR TO SUMMER ROOTS, HAVE BEEN FOUND.

THIS IS A LARGE BAT--IT WEIGHS UP TO AN OUNCE (28g)----AND IT IS A FAIRLY NOISY ONE,IT PRODUCES A THIN, HIGH-PITCHED SQUABBLE NOTE..
