Palestinians Press with UN Membership & Statehood, by Ambassador mo

Despite opposition from Washington and Israel, Palestine is pressing ahead with vote this September/October toward admission of their state to the UN. The US can effectively veto at UN Security Council. However, the Palestinians otherwise will garner an overwhelming majority vote in favor at the UN Security Council and Un General Assembly. From my sources, the Palestinian Authority delegation is making the rounds of various capitals, including Sarajevo. (Bottom PHOTO from UN - UNSG Ban & Palestinian Authority President Abbas). Washington is not at least formally included in the tour. To the contrary, there are indications that Washington has threatened a cutoff of assistance to the Palestinian Authority if it persists with the vote for state membership at the UN. Washington has raised presumably criteria objections to Palestinian UN membership, in particular the lack of fully defined borders. However, the same deficiency could have been attributed to the South Sudan application.(See FILM REPORT - “Palestine South Sudan Parallel” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/palestine-south-sudan-parallel/27841 ) The Palestinian Authority probably has more functioning state institutions than South Sudan upon UN Admission.. which was admitted only a month earlier July 2011. At its creation in 1948, the borders of Israel itself also had not been agreed, but Israel was admitted. The Palestinians are also left with few alternatives. President Obama’s message to the Palestinian Authority that it must negotiate all of this with Israel leaves them in a highly disadvantageous position. They have little bargaining weight compared to Israel, from military, economic or even political perspective. Washington provides Israel with all the political cover that it needs while the Palestinians have one card and chip in their hands to play, their signature. While expanding Israeli settlements do not favor the Palestinians, (Read ARTICLE - “Israel’s Restrictive Zoning Forcing Palestinians Out” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/israels-restrictive-zoning-forcing-palestinians-out-un-by-ambassador-mo/32874 ), they are reluctant to put onto paper that signature feeling that the “deal” is either unfavorable or untenable for the future. This diplomatic battle at the UN does not project to be promising for the Palestinian Authority, with US veto looming. However, it will leave the US and Israel also damaged. While telling the Palestinians “no” on UN membership, no promising or realistic alternative is offered by them either after a half century of on and off negotiations and broken initiatives. This Israeli Government. (Middle PHOTO - UNSG Ban & Israeli PM Netenyahu), may be challenged not only in its attitude toward Palestinians but of its vision for Israel’s own future. While the Palestinians may be losing ground literally with time, Israel may be losing opportunity. Time is on no ones side in this stalemate.
