A sportswear trend that emerged was the increase in popularity of throwback jerseys. Mitchell & Ness was one of the producer of such jerseys.

There has always been a popularity in sports jersey in hip-hop fashion. As we can see Spike Lee wearing a throwback Brooklyn Dodgers jersey in the film "Do the Right Thing."

Will Smith also wore a jersey in his 90s music video called "Summertime."

There was a rise in popularity of very expensive throwbacks in the late 90s, often costing hundreds of dollars. Due to the fact that hip-hop artists wore these pricey jerseys in music videos the demand for them increased. This increase in demand led to the rise of counterfeiters flooding the market with fake jerseys. In order to capitalize on the craze.

This era also saw the split in female and male hip hop fashion. Before this era male and female hip hop fashion had been more or less similar. Women in hip hop had imitated the male tough-guy fashions such as "Loc" sunglasses, baggy pants and heavy work boots.

Rapper Da Brat

Da Brat, accomplished this with a little bit of make-up and lip gloss to make the industrial work boots and work pants feminine.

Female performers who completely shifted the tide was Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim. They popularized high-fashion, glamorous feminine hip hop styles.

While Eve and Lauryn Hill popularized more conservative styles, that still maintained a distinctly hip hop and feminine feel.

In the mid to late 90s gold was replaced by platinum as the metal of choice in hip hop fashion. Fans and artist alike wore silver or platinum jewelry, often embedded with diamonds. The Hot Boys and Juvenile were largely responsible for this trend.

Platinum fronts were also popular. Brian "Baby" Williams, Cash Money Records executive/rapper has an entire mouthful of permanent platinum teeth.

Others had removable metal jeweled teeth coverings known as fashioned grills.

With the arrival of the jewelry culture, luxury brands were established which made inroads into the hip hop market. With brands like 212 Diamond City, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton making appearances in films and hip hop videos.
